a central car park would be Ann Street Car Park: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1uWzSU5xNoDLbvAV6 – there is a parking charge for most of the car parks in Ballycastle. You can park in other areas and meet at the Diamond at 10.15am.
There will be a visit to the Ballycastle museum with a talk from Nic Wright at 10.30am and a visit to Ballycastle coastal sections of Pan’s Rock and Colliery Bay. The road to Colliery Bay cannot be driven along anymore as there has been a collapse near the North Star Dyke close to Marconi’s cottage. We will walk to Bonamargy Friary and along to Pan’s Rock. The walk to Bonamargy Friary and Pan’ Rock will be about 5 kms round trip to the Diamond. For those that want to walk to Colliery Bay, this will add a further distance of about 3kms to the day’s walk. Not all members may want to walk further to Colliery Bay.
We will cover an introduction to the rocks that are found as pebbles on the beach and look at the Carboniferous rocks in situ. We will discuss the environments of formation of the rock and the origin of the Palaeogene igneous rocks. For those that walk further to Colliery Bay we will look at the fossils that can be found in this area and the igneous and sedimentary rocks.
The museum visit and a look at the town urban geology close to the museum will be in the morning. Bring a packed lunch. We will aim to have lunch at the seafront area opposite the Marine hotel. There will be time for a coffee stop and the visit to the coastal section can be a mixture of walking along the coastal section and on the beach so walking boots or walking shoes would need to be worn if you are visiting Colliery Bay. It will be a bit more demanding and can also be observed from the road.
We would encourage people taking part to join as members or be existing members of the BNFC and /or BGS. https://belfastgeologists.org/index.php/about-us/join-us/
