Belfast Geologist’s Society was founded in 1954  and since then has been welcoming new members and encouraging the appreciation of the rocks and geology of Northern Ireland.

N.Ireland has been at the forefront of the geological science since the 18th century with the Neptunists and Vulcanists   debate and the significance of the Portrush Sill at Lansdowne Crescent in this regard.

BENEFITS OF JOINING

Today, N.Ireland continues to provide many leading academic and economic  breakthroughs  in the science ranging from study of the North Atlantic Igneous Province  rocks of the Mournes,Slieve Gullion and Antrim Lavas as just one example  to the gold deposits in  the Dalradian rocks of Mid Ulster and the more recent discoveries of strong geothermal gradients at depth  and the potential of energy being derived as a result.

  • Society membership enables individuals to attend lectures and presentations, mostly in the autumn and winter months on these and various other subjects, sometimes on Zoom and where possible at the Ulster Museum or QUB, where our friends there provide facilities for us to meet.

  • We also have an active field trip programme which runs from spring through the summer – mostly at the weekends but sometimes on weekday evenings which is where the real fun takes place.

FAQ

You do not need to have studied Geology but have an interest in how the landscape was formed and what rocks and fossils tell us about past environments. Being a BGS member will not only bring you into contact with likeminded enthusiasts and widen your horizons by firing up your interest, but it will achieve this in a friendly and enjoyable way.

Our social media sites and website provide information and community dialogue, but we do encourage active participation and your annual membership fee enables the society to cover expenses including insurance and to bring leading geologists to our member events.

If you would like to discuss or have questions answered you can make contact with any of the Committee members or if you prefer you can come on a couple of taster meetings to see what it’s all about or you can fill in the form and return it to us.

Either way, we look forward to welcoming you into the Belfast Geologists Society!
