Blackhead and Portmuck Geology – a whale of a mystery( and much more) at Portmuck

The plan

Morning: a look at the geology of the area including details of the Lower Basalts at Blackhead. Some searching through the beach pebble at Wrens Eggs should uncover some ‘exotic’ material telling us something about the glacial history of the area.

Lunch: plenty of options around Whitehead + benches/tables around seafront for picnic

Afternoon: starting with newly exposed raised beach deposits which included a whale skull! We will also look at the general geology and geomorphology on the east side of the headland.

Health and safety

Morning will be mainly on the surfaced path between Whitehead car park and Blackhead. The Wrens Eggs beach is composed of loose pebbles so care must be taken.

Afternoon will involve a short walk on grass and the beach. We access the east side of Portmuck via steps leading to uneven walking on firm rock surface. Low tide 16.33

Walking poles may be of assistance.

Facilities: No toilets at Whitehead car park – nearest at Castleview Pavillion – Google ‘Public Toilets Castleview’. OR Shores café (really for customers only – excellent cake) – Google ‘Shores Whitehead’

Public toilet at Portmuck Harbour
