class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>and since then has been welcoming new members and encouraging the appreciation of the rocks and geology of Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>N.Ireland has been at the forefront of the geological science since the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century with the Neptunists and Vulcanists <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>debate and the significance of the provide many leading academic and economic<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>breakthroughs<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in the science ranging from study of the North Atlantic Igneous Province<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>rocks of the Mournes,Slieve Gullion and Antrim Lavas as just one example<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to the gold deposits in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the Dalradian rocks of Mid Ulster and the more recent discoveries of strong geothermal gradients at depth<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and the potential of energy being derived as a result.<\/p><ul><li><p>Society membership enables individuals to attend lectures and presentations, mostly in the autumn and winter months on these and various other subjects, sometimes on Zoom and where possible at the Ulster Museum or QUB, where our friends there provide facilities for us to meet.<\/p><\/li><li><p>We also have an active field trip programme which runs from spring through the summer \u2013 mostly at the weekends but sometimes on weekday
