Fieldtrip to Trainor’s Rocks,western Mourne Mountains

Highlights

  • visit a newly discovered formation of pebbly gritstone – microconglomerate adjoining the Mournes G4 Granite
  • identify the mainly igneous clasts and consider their provenance
  • discuss the formation of rip-up clasts, graded bedding and other sedimentary structures
  • from the hilltop enjoy wide-ranging views including the Leitrim River U-shaped valley and Carlingford Mountain
  • appreciate wildflowers and birdsong (hopefully)
  • find evidence of former industry such as trackways, access ramps, ancient walls

PLEASE NOTE
 
  • The excursion will involve walking up a steep hillside with ~300 metres elevation gain, followed by several kilometres walking on uneven and potentially boggy moorland.
  • Bring a packed lunch and drinks for the day.
  • Bring appropriate footwear and clothing for potentially wet/cold/windy conditions – there is no shelter on the hilltop. (Trip will be cancelled if weather is unfavourable.)
  • Parking for maximum of 8 cars on the Brannigan family’s driveway – please park some cars in Hilltown and car-share from there.
  • Prompt departure at 11:00 from the Brannigan’s driveway – please don’t arrive late.
