- Saturday July 19th 10.00
- Lead: Karen Parks
- Meet: Ann Street Car Park
There will be a visit to the Ballycastle museum with Nic Wright and a visit to Ballycastle coastal sections at Pan’s Rock and Colliery Bay. Here we will cover an introduction to the rocks that are found as pebbles on the beach and look at the Carboniferous rocks in situ. We will discuss the environments of formation of the rock and the origin of the Palaeogene igneous rocks.
The museum visit and a look at the town urban geology close to the museum will be in the morning. There will be time for a coffee stop and you can also bring a packed lunch. The visit to the coastal section can be a mixture of walking along the coastal section and on the beach so walking boots or walking shoes would need to be worn if you are visiting Colliery Bay. It will be a bit more demanding and can also be observed from the road. The information will be updated about the Museum after a pre-visit to the museum during the Easter break. This part of the trip is a follow up to the talk that we received from Nic Wright in April 2024. Members and people who take part in this trip will be emailed materials after the trip linked to the area.
We would encourage people taking part to join as members or be existing members of the BNFC and /or BGS. https://belfastgeologists.org/index.php/about-us/join-us/
The trip will have 2 distinct parts. If you are attending this trip let us know by email and contact us on belfastgeolsoc22@gmail.com If you are attending this trip and if you will be there for the morning only.
